Strengthening board-level safety governance with Compass 360

Boards are meant to govern safety, not just receive a quarterly report. With Edith Cowan University and the NSW Centre for Work Health and Safety, we built a board self-assessment on Compass 360.

The challenge

Boards often receive lagging safety indicators after incidents have occurred. ECU and the Centre wanted to help boards examine a different question: whether their current values, oversight and strategic practice equipped them to govern safety effectively.

The concept needed to become a credible assessment and a useful experience for directors, not another static governance report.

The approach

Discovery combined corporate-report analysis, stakeholder interviews and econometric modelling. Curio then helped shape a capability framework spanning values-driven, compliance-driven and strategy-driven governance.

The framework was implemented on Compass 360 with individual results, peer benchmarking and practical action planning.

What Curio delivered

  • Corporate-report and evidence analysis
  • Stakeholder interviews
  • Econometric modelling
  • A 12-question capability assessment
  • Three governance dimensions
  • A four-level maturity model
  • Personalised results and real-time benchmarking
  • Downloadable action plans
  • Single sign-on access

The impact

Directing Safety gave boards a structured way to assess governance maturity, compare results and identify actions before relying solely on lagging incident data.
