Boosting student employability at Edith Cowan University

Employability usually sits in a careers office, separate from the curriculum. Edith Cowan University wanted it built into the student experience across disciplines instead, so we designed it in rather than bolting it on.

The challenge

Career development is often separated from the curriculum and positioned as an additional service students must seek out. ECU wanted employability learning to sit closer to students' academic experience and work across disciplines.

The modules needed to be relevant regardless of the learner's field while giving academics practical guidance for implementation.

The approach

Curio designed six Career Development Learning modules around reflection, recognition of strengths and exploration of future directions. Student focus groups informed the experience, including testing three approaches to note-taking before selecting templates aligned with student preferences.

What Curio delivered

  • Six discipline-agnostic career development modules
  • Reflection and strength-identification activities
  • Career-exploration tasks
  • Student focus groups
  • Testing of three note-taking approaches
  • Reusable note-taking templates
  • Guidance for academic implementation

The impact

ECU gained a reusable way to integrate employability development within different courses and disciplines.
