Inspiring Words for New PhDs from Dr David Bowser

At an Occasional Graduation Address at The University of Melbourne, Dr David Bowser, Curio's CEO and Founder , delivered an engaging address that reflected on his own journey from academia to entrepreneurship. Drawing on his 20-year career across research, strategy, and business, David shared candid insights into the challenges and opportunities faced by PhD graduates navigating life beyond the lab.

He encouraged graduates to reflect on their purpose, embrace change, and recognise the transferable skills developed through their research. Dr Bowser outlined six key lessons from his experience—valuable in any professional path:

  1. Research, Analysis, and Insight – Learn to draw meaning from complex data and apply it in real-world contexts.

  2. Project Management – From idea to execution, a PhD teaches rigorous end-to-end project delivery.

  3. Managing Up – Navigate supervisor relationships and understand how to influence those in leadership roles.

  4. Written and Verbal Communication – Clear articulation of complex ideas is a critical and rare skill.

  5. Presentation Skills – The ability to communicate confidently and effectively in front of an audience is essential.

  6. Group Management and Facilitation – Teaching and collaboration experience lays the groundwork for team leadership.

“Completion of a PhD is a marvellous achievement,” Dr Bowser said. “But it’s also a beginning—the start of applying your skills in ways that can shape industries, influence thinking, and improve the world.”
