We recently sat down with Dr. Kaushik Sridhar—facilitator, sustainability leader, and lifelong learner—to discuss what makes an exceptional online learning experience. Hosted by our Head of Faculty Services, Celeste Kocabay, the conversation delved into Kaushik’s unique journey and the insights he’s gained along the way.
With a career that spans professional sport, corporate sustainability, and now education, Kaushik brings a dynamic, learner-centred approach to facilitation. His story is a powerful reminder that the most effective online instructors are not only skilled educators but also empathetic guides, responsive to learner needs and the shifting digital landscape.
From Corporate to Classroom
“I started as a professional tennis player before moving into corporate sustainability,” Kaushik shares. Over nearly two decades, he held senior roles in the Big Four and across sectors, including mining, real estate, healthcare, IT, and education.
But it was his growing passion for mentoring and coaching that opened the door to training and development. As digital transformation reshaped how learning was delivered, Kaushik recognised an opportunity: to bring his commercial acumen into the online classroom.
“My background in consulting taught me how to understand client needs and deliver tailored solutions—skills that translate directly into learner engagement.”
Key Skills for Online Facilitation
Kaushik is clear-eyed about the skills that matter most in a virtual setting. At the top of the list?
-
Strong communication
-
Adaptability
-
Technological fluency
-
Empathy
-
The ability to create community
“Facilitation isn’t just about delivering content—it’s about building connection, fostering participation, and responding in real time to how people are learning.”
Designing for Engagement
To cater to different learning preferences, Kaushik draws on a mix of teaching strategies: visual resources, interactive activities, collaborative work, and frequent feedback. Tools like Zoom, Moodle, and Slido are part of his regular toolkit.
“In one course, I integrated a virtual simulation to help students apply theory in a risk-free environment. It shifted the energy immediately—suddenly, they were experimenting, learning from mistakes, and building real confidence.”
He’s also big on small touches that build community: informal chats, virtual coffee breaks, discussion forums, and peer feedback.
Supporting Diverse Learners
Online learning brings flexibility, but also challenges—especially for students juggling work, family, and motivation. Kaushik combats this with structure, clear milestones, and regular check-ins.
“I also encourage students to use time management tools and set personal goals. Sometimes, it’s those practical interventions that make the biggest difference.”
Always Learning, Always Iterating
Kaushik sees student feedback as a vital part of course development. He surveys learners regularly and adapts content, platforms, and delivery styles in response.
“One of the most rewarding moments was when a student who had struggled with traditional learning told me the online course gave them the skills and confidence they needed to earn a promotion. That’s why I do this work.”
Looking Ahead
In Kaushik’s view, the role of online facilitators is set to evolve. The future will see them move further into the role of guide and coach, helping learners navigate more personalised and AI-enhanced learning journeys.
“Technologies like VR and AI will change the game—but the human connection will remain central. Facilitators will be there to interpret, support, and empower.”
Final Advice for Aspiring Facilitators
“Stay adaptable. Stay empathetic. Remember that no two learners are the same, and your willingness to evolve is what will make you truly effective.”
