Custom Canvas development for Melbourne Business School

Melbourne Business School (MBS) is home to Australia’s most highly regarded MBA and business analytics degrees, as well as short courses for professionals and organisations. MBS has a range of custom solutions for organisations, working with some of the biggest names in business to design and deliver custom learning and development programs in the areas of transformation, leadership, culture and strategy.

The leadership course to be delivered was hosted in the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS) and required a simple to use registration process which Canvas LMS was not able to provide. As an Instructure partner, Curio has the expertise to develop custom solutions for Canvas LMS and was able to provide a solution for MBS and their client.

Curio’s User Experience and Software Development teams met with MBS to review and understand the requirements for their client. Once we had determined the project scope and feasibility, our team developed two high-level solution concepts. These two options together with market integration plans were presented to MBS. Once a solution was chosen, we further refined the solution, providing detailed workflows, low and high-fidelity designs and an architectural diagram.

After a small number of revisions, the prototype was developed by our team and tested. Curio used a number of the Canvas API endpoints to create user accounts and enrol users into the leadership course. Our solution utilised the Azure cloud platform for serverless functions, which provides a robust way to perform functions without the need to maintain server infrastructure, therefore reducing costs. We also developed a mobile responsive front end to interface between the user and the APIs.

The solution was deployed on budget and within the client timeframe. Within the first month, more than 600 users have registered and accessed the leadership course.
