Capability that stands up to a professional standard

Curio works with professional bodies, member organisations and businesses on capability frameworks, credentialing and the learning that sits behind a qualification people are judged by.

The problem

A competency list tells someone what they should know, not what to do next

Professional bodies and businesses are good at defining capability and much less good at making it usable. A framework gets written, published, and then sits there, because nothing connects it to what an individual should actually do about their own gaps.

We built a capability framework and self-assessment tool for CPA Australia, whose members number more than 160,000 across over 100 countries, so a member can identify their own strengths and development areas and get pointed at real development options from the result. For CIPFA we worked on the other end of the same problem, fixing a training-purchasing journey that was getting in the way of members buying the learning they had already decided they wanted.

Governance, finance and legal capability all carry the same constraint: the standard is public, the consequences of falling short are real, and the learning has to be defensible.

Where we help

Capability frameworks

Frameworks structured to be used rather than filed: capabilities, elements and statements a person can self-assess against and act on.

Member and learner journeys

Finding and removing the friction between someone deciding to learn something and actually starting, which is where a surprising amount of revenue is lost.

Governance and director education

Learning for boards and directors where the audience is experienced, time-poor and unforgiving of anything that wastes it.

Qualification and study support

Study guides, assessment preparation and course design for qualifications people are examined on and judged by.

Credentialing and digital badges

Credentials that carry real evidence of capability, and the systems to issue and verify them.

Commercial learning strategy

Multi-year education strategy for organisations whose learning offer is also a revenue line and has to work as both.

Case studies

Business and law work

Higher education
Becoming the standing course design partner

By late 2019 RMIT Online was growing faster than its procurement could commission course design. We became the standing design partner, so new courses could move without re-running approvals each time.

Higher education
Modernising distance learning at scale

The University of New England's long history in distance education had become the constraint. We modernised its digital learning environment at scale, against rising student expectations and post-pandemic competitive pressure.

Higher education
Designing four MBA courses

RMIT's College of Business and Law wanted its MBA to look and feel like the flagship it was meant to be. We designed four premium courses to a visibly higher standard.

Professional learning
Finding out why training sales stalled

CIPFA knew its training-purchasing journey was not converting as it should. Anecdotal evidence tells you something is wrong but not what to fix, so we found the friction and removed it.

Professional learning
Turning a competency list into next steps

A competency list tells a member what they should know, not what to do next. For CPA Australia's 160,000 members we built a capability framework and a self-assessment that points somewhere real.

Professional learning
Mapping the next five years of CPD

Continuing professional development does not stay still. CPA Australia needed a future-focused view of where its own CPD should head, so we built a five-year digital learning ecosystem strategy.
